Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise when she was a little girl. Her aunt was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote social activism. DuVernay's mother also had a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to communicate by means of the medium of art. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has lived for many generations. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she received degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish in the house that belonged to a member of the jury. As a result of her work she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also launched several social media and lifestyle networks, including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
